"My focus is always on helping my patients to be healthy, happy and safe"
PHILOSOPHY & PRINCIPLES
"My focus is always on helping my patients to be healthy, happy and safe. It is a blessing and an honour to be in this privileged position as a doctor and a surgeon. I feel a great sense of duty and responsibility to serve my patients as a member of my team. My colleagues at Derriford Hospital are a brilliant example of good teamwork. It is a wonderful job to work with these kind and hard working people. "
"Whenever patients undergo an operation there is always a balance of benefits and risks. My job is to optimise the outcome for my patients to achieve the very best result possible whilst keeping the risks to the absolute minimum. I enjoy getting to know my patients and listening to their ideas, concerns and expectations."
Update since 2021: I have decided to significantly limit my private practice, choosing instead to focus all my time and energy on delivery to my NHS patients and to look after my young family. I am also delighted to have been appointed the Departmental Lead for Medical Student Training which is another important role for me. It has been a pleasure to help patients in the private setting and I hope to be able at some point to serve private patients again in the future.
OPTIMISING BENEFIT FOR PATIENT
There are certain operations that seem to offer many patients a good "benefit-to-risk ratio" as I like to call it. These are operations where the results are often good with high patient satisfaction and a relatively low (or more justifiable) risk of problems or complications.
Examples of such operations include :-
- Breast Reconstruction Surgery (especially autologous surgery which means using the patients "own tissue" - this leads to a soft, warm and natural reconstruction that is life-long).
- Breast Reduction Surgery
- Lipomodelling
- Carpal Tunnel Surgery (for carpal tunnel syndrome)
- Excision of skin lesions (moles or tags)
